Perception of Self/ Self Portrait Karen Colville 2025

Calm, beauty, inspiration
Being Canadian
I visited the USA a number of times, this prepared me for international status. I did not feel it was the right place for me to make any attempt to move there, or get a green card or even become a citizen.. I had the American dream and when I visited Hollywood for the fourth time, I became disillusioned, too much reality set in. I consider myself as an ordinary person that has accomplished extraordinary goals in life.
I could not dream big enough. I could see so much tragedy with the culture, pop culture, as much as joy, friendship and family. I think America would have eaten me alive in retrospect. I accomplished culture in different shapes and forms.
Being Canadian actually meant something to me. Canada today, sure has changed with mass immigration. All countries change and evolve the same as standards and affordability for many. When I was in high school, I would have been able to study the world, instead of Canada, I would have not experienced what I experienced the good, bad and ugly. Post secondary taught me much more, so did life experience.
Visual Art became more important to me, my Canadian identity and experience was and is very important. Going to art school was as important to me as going to a medical school. I consider myself very lucky to go as far as I did in my experience. Initially, I thought globalism was going to benefit Canada. There is too much corruption with it and it is very complex.
You have to live and breathe your talent and be in the industry, living there for many years before someone will invest big money into you as a business. I also did not want to sleep my way in either, choosing sex, drugs and rock and roll only could work for so long and I did not want this to stay with me for a lifetime, that is dangerous and wreckless, worse than being a “starving artist:| the very little I had was not enough to so called make it big. I have had a lot of success and accomplishment. When your age and life experience comes into play, sex, drugs and rock and roll is a bad joke.
I came close so many times. Many Canadians made the leap into the arms of America and achieved a career in arts and entertainment, some with incredible beyond belief success. Celebrity culture and social icons are famous in Canada for being American and not Canadian. Very few people in this business can actually make it in Canada. I did have some truly amazing experiences and met some interesting people. I did not like how the game was played, let alone in Canada. I also pissed some people off in the industry, being I was not happy with one genre,I have to remain quiet on. I did Nashville, I did LA American is massive with millions in population.. We have huge major influences over us in Canada, the United Kingdom and the USA.
I intentionally did not do things that most people in the industry did in collaboration with different genres, I was still a part of it. I wanted to stay independent, in music, with a small following and that is what I achieved, I would have liked the money as more money without the fame , it does not work this way. I was in Hollywood as a visiting guest at music conventions, for one big movie role that if I had gotten it would have stuck with me for life, I was glad I did not get the part. I put America behind me over the course of my career.
I had my sights on Europe, there is so much History there it was a lot to take in. I truly wanted to be a painter over the crazy world of Music that I was a part of the music scene in Canada for over a decade.

Art as a healing tool
I am exploring art as a healing tool, holistic healing arts with holistic healing modalities.
We go through changes in life. Wellness through creative expression can help the creative person or group adapt to changes in life.
I am exploring expressive arts for regenerative and recreational purposes, self exploration, health and wellness, as an agent for personal transformation and confidence building.
Art can also be a stepping stone, a learning tool when on the direction to other goals or life accomplishments.
I have often had people ask if they could work with me one on one to explore painting and gain artisan skills to sell for community opportunity integration as development and social cohesion or for self discovery on their journey in a private location setting as a studio or park, garden .
I will take on clients, when I feel I have more field credentials and find the appropriate locations for a studio practice.
My area of focus goal is gaining more credentials and opening a private holistic practice of expressive arts with a studio. I am working on this development.
Introduction to Art Therapy Certificate: Karen Colville

Introduction
Artist Statement : I have worked with diverse groups of people throughout my career in the arts. I recognize the importance and value of community and community integration. A community that is with whole health minded people with common values.
Art is something that has always been there for me like a really good friend, I get to use concepts, imagination, as a part of consciousness, connect with human emotions, process emotions with maturity, complex problem solving, sentient beings, other worlds, cultures and experiences and the beauty exists in the harshness of the natural world that also has cruelty in it and how to over come the onset of violence and cruelty in this world as a medium of expression out of this kind of business .
The world would truly be a horrible place without art, especially in the cases of War. I find continued growth peace in my image making and other mediums of expression that support my work. My art also promotes healing with peaceful and calming images, some derived from nature.
My artistic practice, simplistic and complex. My actions and accomplishments speaks volumes, it is very hard work that at times seems easier, then it can get complex depending on the project or goal. I also know finding balance can be very tricky at times and the importance of rest to human health.
My comeback with courage was totally unexpected, in long term health recovery, I was studying herbalism in BC at the certificate level with other important breakthrough health modalities, with no plans what so ever to create art. Art has a tendency to embrace and take over. My art practice completely took over my herbalist practice of study. I did not intend this, it was something that kept happening as where did my time and energy go? I had to keep going in some capacity regardless.
I use art as a means to connect with community on important social causes, and in Vancouver, social issues of great national importance, while chronically ill and learning about medical research. I also found myself working with UBC and Simon Fraser on many occasions. I also in the past, worked as a fund raiser in the arts in community and in health on many diseases, Cancer, different types of Cancers, Neurodivergent, in 30 thousand diseases known to humanity. In the past, I also donated a hundred percent of my works to social and international causes, community non profits, until I could no longer afford to in my budget. I kept at my practice any way.
I am definitely not what is today considered as" rich or famous", sorry to disappoint you in any way, I am also part Canadian Loyalist as a part of my identity and heritage, and my rights and identity as I know it are also important to me, even they need some kind of revision. I am a speck in this vast Universe, I am a tiny puzzle piece in a grand matrix. My contributions and accomplishments in the arts are important.
Arts & Sciences

My contribution to the arts and community cultural activities is of great importance to myself and to community. Medical advancements that actually benefit society are of great importance, the same in Medical Arts. as in the Arts. This is of greater importance to me as an individual and part of community.

I actually, in reality, I live a modest and humble life as a creative person. I create paintings, photography, I model on occasion for photographers, I was singing and performing also.
Why I am a creative : My art brings elegance, joy, serenity, calm, peace, uniqueness, pleasure, connection, balance, beautiful decor and to those with those who need it for when they need it, in their experience

Research into Quantum physics and Consciousness brought me to creating this image into a video.

My values of natural health, nutrition, botanicals, natural dyes in slow fashion, artisanal making, homesteading, access to nature, walks hikes scenery, humanities with some social justice, proper rest, moderation, peace is incorporated in my art making music making, process along with some experimentation in the creative process. I am a creative and it took me sometime to understand as to why. We are all works in progress.
It is something that is not typically done by rich patrons. I have a different kind of wealth, in how I experience my world view as an Artist. What is important to me, as a person and artist, is that the present tech is a benefit to humanity and planet with the Universe and multiverse. Not as a means of complete social control that brings further harm to humanity and planet.
This was not the point. No one truly enjoys struggling. Some struggles you can come out with better outcomes.
Social change in perception requires to persevere, diplomacy and struggle. I am grateful for all of my accomplishments and in working with others.
Independence meant more to have a taste of freedom with my work while not fitting into mainstream society or the status quo. I am also honored in Canada and international in different countries with my art, with exhibition and in publishing UK, Ireland, Europe, Caribbean and many others.
The majority of people professionally and personally thank me for uplifting their spirits and understanding with empathy of what they are experiencing this is of actual greater importance in making a difference and keeping humble. I also Thank with much gratitude ,to all whom have supported my journey in the arts, no matter what mediums, I express my voice, culture and identity with. My ongoing interest in naturopathic modalities in healing.
I listened, collaborated, exhibited, on many community projects, I also volunteered with numerous organizations on social causes, I also focused my strengths with a Canadian focus, a BC focus, I felt a very strong need to revisit my Celtic Heritage. This also gives me strength with diversity, history and some of the hidden truths with different perspectives.
What I have to offer when it comes to art, arts values, artist talks, arts education presentation, whether it is something I paint by hand, an image made out of eco friendly minimal impact materials, stones, stitched artisan tireless hours by hand, an independent short film, a song to uplift spirits is exactly what this world needs.
Whether is is representing the under represented. I have what it takes to create something truly meaningful with beauty from nature.
I have worked in community, arts and culture, with children and their parents, worldly people, First Nations, Women, gay people, ethnic religious groups, immigrants from different backgrounds in diversity, disability advocates, natural health advocates, eccentric adults. My life in the arts, has always been fulfilling and rewarding, aside any struggle or serious challenges.
I stay true to myself in all that I create .
When I share my art, I share my light and joy with peaceful serenity.

Karen Colville is a Canadian Visual Artist and recording Artist, with exploration of themes of Canadian Nature in her creative images.
Canada with being the common wealth may only be 154 years old . Canada’s landscape is impressive no matter where you find yourself. Some of the most interesting sights in Canada are the rock formations that were formed thousands – or even millions – of years ago.., rock formations have proven to be around for millions of years.
Seeing many of the land formations inspires and intrigues.
Karen has been drawn to the landscape since her childhood days, her Father gave her a deep appreciation of nature and rural life. She finds painting the West Coast's natural beauty is dream fulfillment , the Canadian landscape is a strong part of Karen's identity as an Artist and in with connection to Canadian beauty in nature with respect to the lands and cultures.

Artist Statement Creating art is how I communicate my enthusiasm toward the out doors, to beauty in nature, with simplicity, the connection is as cultural expression, is a part of my Canadian identity.
The textured surface of my work also serves as a visual metaphor for resilience. Just as nature changes to adapt, the canvas silently transforms as multiple layers of paint is poured, brushed and sanded. Exploring with different mediums brings different results.
The canvas is therefore reborn with an internal energy that echoes the resilient durability of nature.
Canada was once this massive land of peace and promise to immigrants this is of great importance to myself and to other Canadians living with shared values in a Western democracy aside the Global problems of present times, my art reflects the values of peace, harmony, community engagement with inclusive access, social justice with unity in my country,
I have always had and today, have great respect to connection to the land and the Ocean, Indigenous people. It was difficult understanding what a Canadian identity truly is there is distinction. Being able to paint whenever possible, gives me a sense of inner peace and freedom I grew up with having Canadian values.
I happen to love big old trees, conservation with respect the longevity of this land, it is a strong value of living with Canadian culture with diversity with such vastness .Composition and hues in a softer and quiet light. It is a constant exploration into the expansive landscape and interpretation of the True North. It is an invitation to safely connect with nature. I tend to promote healthier eco systems.
Contribution to social development community
Art and living with chronic illness has presented me with a lot of challenges in my career.
I have explored accessible and sacred places to paint, what was considered easy at one time was challenging with my level of mobility. I sat on disability panels with success, to advocate for accessible tourism with nature and the disabled to be included with access. Going into the Canadian wild, camping, or bush craft can be beyond challenging, I go as far as I am able. I rarely visit a place on my own for reasons of personal safety ,unless it is accessible with breaking barriers is the goal of achievement and contribution. Canada is so vast and diverse, a transformative experience. I have learned empathy and compassion.
Interview: What drives you the most in the arts ,community and advocating in disability justice?
Changing systemic inequalities will take all of us working together –
Cultural tourism experiences are safe, accessible, and inclusive.”
There are places in Canada, I am drawn to this is why I advocate so all can enjoy and relate to in their life experience.
Living with chronic illness how do you create change in perceptions ?
Chronic illnesses tend to be one big old drop in the bummer bucket it presents realistic limitations. .Transformation is turned around with a connection for healing and nature appreciation in partnership with the arts and keeps me connected to community and to natural healing elements, nature exposure in any amount helps deal with pain , it gets us closer to life. in our experience. There is a natural cycle of survival ,life and death and eternal life in the spiritual dimension. Why I continue to create art with people and organizations that support.
Why do you use nature to draw attention to your art?
Nature is one of the greatest sources of inspiration for many Artists through out time.
I understand that nature is not for everyone or their lifestyle , some people collect cartoons, art as toys perhaps something missed in childhood, They as people who are modern and get into tech ,want shiny post modern objects and technology , fully controlled techno driven, techno dystopian lives, while others are self sufficient and live off grid, not everyone wants or needs this level of technocracy, this is okay , there are people that have different values for different reasons and appreciate my contribution to society.
I like the outdoors, that is safe, accessible and inclusive experiences are truly valuable. I have proven this direction.
I value the environment. I tend to study natural cycles .The concept of appreciation is common to both art appreciation and nature appreciation. Perfect symmetry might bring a sense of peace and stability, while an asymmetrical balance could add a level of tension or intrigue.
Music
Being in the arts over the price of fame had meaning to me, I did my own thing exploring different genres, self expression, this way I was not chasing after illusions than like chasing after a rainbow for a pot of gold, there is more talent than money. I was not keen on moving to the USA to make it big. I enjoyed visiting there over the years.
I remain a person with unique abilities and talents in Canada, more than a product of commodity or even a celebrity, this is the culture celebrity driven control of the masses was something I could not adapt to. Art has always been there for me, entertainment not as much and that is alright.
I became more introverted over the years with creativity, I put myself out there as much as anyone, the arts was and is a way for me to socialize and get away with being introverted, over being extroverted, private over being a public figure, being known in the arts is a great honor with achievement, having unique kind of accomplishment in the arts. I kept painting instead of being a part of the industry machine. I found the entertainment industry frustrating , the arts seemed a little crazier and more interesting . Independence does not get recognition of the masses, as the status quo of mainstream, it sure gives an Artist fulfillment of having a sense of freedom is more on creating what you love, living an abundant life and sharing your gifts with others. I am always grateful to those whom supported my work and social causes.
The value of my experience is more meaningful it is places I cherish and they happen to be part of Canada. I’m a believer that art and other beautiful things can come from our struggles. My connection with nature has been a long one, it helps me cope with the world and with living with long term and chronic illness. It helps me transform everything I experience into something that has meaning to me. My collectors have seen the value and skill set and unique interpretation I offer."
